“It is not a true shoulder-in if your inside leg is behind your outside leg. Listen to the words: shoulder-in. It is not haunches out.” - Lendon Gray
In this video from DressageClinic.com, Lendon Gray shows us her dedication to junior and young riders. Kat Mathieu does her proud while riding Simpatico, a 10 year old Hanoverian that was donated to Dressage4Kids, a not for profit organization founded by Lendon.

Simpatico came to Dressage4Kids as a well trained but out of shape Intermediaire horse. Kat is schooling him at about third level to develop his strength and reaction to the aids. In part one, they are working on his willingness to go forward by suppling and lengthening his stride.
In part 2 Lendon explains that many people use the corner every time they ask for the canter depart and work on trot to canter transitions on the long side and center line. This is good work and something we all should check on in our riding.

Leg yield comes along in part three to help Kat create more angle in the shoulder-in. The leg yield works very well as we can see the shoulder-in become visibly better. Off come the stirrups to help develop the seat and quiet the leg.

In the rein-back, Lendon explains that at "every single stride, he must be listening to you.” As they move to shoulder-in in the opposite direction, Simpatico has an easier time and shows us how lovely he can be. In the lengthening, Lendon encourages Kat to have "power within whoa.” The pair shows us some lovely work; still Kat has no stirrups.

This video is all about the basics, for the horse and the rider. Dressage4Kids is lucky to have Simpatico and he is lucky to have them. What a team they will be for years to come.

This video is full of "Lendon-isms”. One of the best: "If you need to practice it to get it done, you are learning to do it. If you can do it correctly the first time, you CAN do it.”
